What's your AMH?

Updated: Nov 16, 2023

The journey to getting pregnant can be a long one and if you're like me, you'll be micromanaging the heck out of it. It's tough though when you don't know what anything means and how it's impacting your ability to conceive.

The lack of education is a bit disheartening and the way health care providers make you feel when you ask questions led me to find another way.

First things first, even if you're not actively trying to get pregnant, order a modern fertility test. www.ro.co/modernfertility.com. Personally I think our doctors should be this proactive but a majority of them are not. More than likely your obgyn will wait until you've been trying for 6-12 months before they dig in deeper. Thankfully modern fertility provides you with quick and concise results.

What it tells you:

  • AMH - anti-mullerian hormone, which corresponds to a person's egg count. Although it's connected to your egg count, it doesn't predict your fertility. However, it does give you a good indication of what your ovarian reserve (number of eggs) is and can better help you in making tough decisions like freezing your eggs. It's good to highlight that although your AMH might be right in line with your age, it doesn't tell you if they are healthy unfortunately. Either way, I'd rather know where I stand versus not knowing.

  • FSH - follicle stimulating hormone responsible for controlling the menstrual cycle and the production of eggs in the ovaries. FSH levels can help identify if there are any potential fertility issues.

  • E2 - Increased Estradiol levels cause the egg to mature & then release from the ovary. It also impacts the thickness of the uterus lining which is necessary for a fertilized egg to implant.

  • PRL - Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. High levels can cause infertility.

  • LH - Luteinizing hormone spurs ovulation. It's the easiest hormone to track your ovulation cycle each month. Highly suggest Easy@Home Ovulation Test Sticks. It's super easy & more to come on that.

  • TSH - Thyroid stimulating hormone tells you how well your thyroid is working which is important to your reproductive health.

Why is all this important - because these are necessary pieces to your fertility puzzle. There are unfortunately a lot of other blockers that could stand in the way but most require much deeper testing than a quick prick of the finger. In summary - get the test.
